The Department of Neurosciences at the Ernakulam Medical Centre hospital plays an important role in our mission to provide comprehensive care to patients suffering from neurological disorders.

The brain, the spinal cord and the nerves, together control the functioning of the body. When something goes wrong with any of these components you can have trouble moving, speaking, swallowing, breathing or learning. You can also have problems with your memory, senses or mood. These problems are collectively known as neurological disorders.

Neurological disorders can occur as congenital defects, as part of old age or due to an injury from an accident. Most of these disorders require prompt medical attention and some could even be life threatening.

Our hospital provides the services of highly qualified and experienced consultants for treatment of neurological conditions and a dedicated unit for handling neurotrauma, providing a comprehensive multidisciplinary care to critically ill patients suffering from traumatic injuries of the brain, spinal cord or the nervous system. The unit operates round the clock and has helped to earn us a reputation of being the pioneers in trauma care in the region, over the last 30 years.

Facilities available

• Outpatient consultation service for neurological disorders
• Special clinics for headache, epilepsy, stroke and Parkinsonism
• State-of-the-art operation theatres for neurosurgeries (Adult & Paediatric)

Neurocritical Care

Neurocritical care is the intensive care management of patients with life-threatening neurological and neurosurgical illnesses such as massive stroke, bleeding in or around the brain. This is a specialized form of care different from the normal ICUs because such care provides the interface between the brain and other organ systems in the setting of critical illness. Timely and appropriate response to neurocritical events is the hallmark of such care and can significantly alter the patient’s outcome.

Our neurosurgical ICUs provide specialized patient centric care using modern instruments managed by an experienced team to handle such delicate care. Our multidisciplinary physicians, surgeons, anaesthetists, specially trained nurses and support teams are available round the clock to provide one-to-one care and manage the unique needs of such critically ill patients. Paediatric patients are cared for in a separate ICU equipped with paediatric ventilators for epilepsies including status epilepticus.
