The Orthopaedic Department at EMC is recognized by DNB training.

Ernakulam Medical Centre actively supports the Trauma Life Support Society. The Immediate Trauma Life Support (ITLS) Workshops, conducted exclusively at EMC, are the brainchild of this institution. They are conducted every six months and aim to integrate the life support services of all the trauma related departments and impart uniform and standardized training to those participating in these workshops.

The programme is aimed at those doctors who are actually responsible for the initial evaluation, resuscitation and management of trauma victims. Surgical, Orthopaedic and Anaesthetic registrars will find this course useful. However it is aimed primarily at the Casualty Medical Officer and the Intensivists who are at the forefront of actually implementing the support to trauma victims.

The Course:

The course is being organized on the lines of the internationally acclaimed Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course and there will be relatively few lectures on the principles of Initial Trauma Care by eminent faculty (mostly ATLS trained). By far the stress will be on hands-on training of the delegates on models and animal torsos. All major emergency procedures listed below will be performed by each delegate.

 Endotracheal Intubation
 Ricothyroidectomy
 Tracheostomy
 Central Venous Cannulation
 Venous cut down
 Pericardiocentesis / Diagnostic peritoneal lavage
 Intercostal Drainage
 Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation

Evaluation:

There will be an evaluation system at the end of the course comprising of multiple choice questions, X-ray evaluation and a moulage (examination of sham victims) and certificates of merit will be awarded. A pre-course test will also be arranged to assess the entry level skills of each delegate. A core manual with the theoretical aspects of the resuscitation protocols will be sent to the participants two weeks prior to the course. The exit exam will be heavily based on this manual.

Registration:

There are only 24 seats for the course since the instruction for Trauma Life Support has to be on a one to one basis. Registration is strictly on a first come first serve basis. The course fee is Rs.3000/- and includes all course materials and handouts, working lunch, tea, snacks and a course dinner at a star hotel with the faculty. (It is recommended that the hospitals sponsor whole or part of the fee for their Casualty Medical Officers.)

We hope you will avail of this unique opportunity to upgrade your trauma life support skills.

Please register early to avoid disappointment.
Cheques / Demand Drafts may be sent in favour of Trauma Life Support Society, payable at Ernakulam.
