OVERVIEW

Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth (tumor) with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. All tumors are not cancerous and do not spread to other parts of the body. These are known as benign tumors. Possible signs and symptoms of cancer include:

• A new lump in any part of the body
• Abnormal bleeding
• A prolonged cough
• Unexplained weight loss
• Change in bowel movements

The three components that can improve survival rate in cancer are

• Prevention – This is by reduction of risk factors like tobacco & alcohol consumption
• Early diagnosis – Screening of common cancers and comprehensive diagnosis
• Treatment – Medical or surgical oncology
