An introduction to the Ayurvedic Maternity Care at EMC

Becoming a mother is one of the most exciting times in a woman’s life.

Ayurvedic maternity services provided at EMC include care for women from the start of pregnancy to about a few days after the child birth. The components are divided into the three stages of pregnancy, namely antenatal, intrapartum (birth) and post natal care. Administering proper care during all these phases is critical for the overall health of the mother and the newborn.

Why choose the Ayurvedic approach?
Ayurveda, the science of life, is a traditional system of medicine and Prasutitantra, that deals with obstetrics and gynaecology is one of its main branches of treatment.

Ayurveda compares human conception to the germination and sprouting of a seed and its transformation into a sapling. Pregnancy can be a challenging time of life as the mother’s body goes through numerous changes in order to create and support the development of a new life.

Ayurveda is an excellent addition to the care provided by medical doctors and other facilities available at present.

Ayurveda, through its holistic approach creates support for the physical and emotional well being for the mother and her baby by prescribing specific nutritional measures during the various stages of pregnancy. It is believed that the Ayurvedic methods or practices, if followed during pregnancy, will lead to a complication-free delivery.

How Ayurveda handles maternal care

Prasuti tantra, is the branch of Ayurvedic Gynaecology that deals with pregnancy, labour and Streeroga deals with the management of diseases manifesting specially in women.  The treatment involves Gynecology and Obstetrics, management of antenatal and postnatal care, common gynecological problems and menopausal syndrome to utilize the techniques of female health care and to achieve a healthy baby.

Garbhini paricharya or antenatal care is the most important aspect in the whole area of Prasuthi Tantra, because all other aspects of pregnancy depend on this phase.

A proper garbhini paricharya would result in the correct development of the foetus, its delivery, the health of the mother and thus her ability to withstand the strain of labour and have an eventless postpartum phase. The care of the pregnant woman reflects on the quality and health of the offspring.

Antenatal care starts from the day of conception till the time of delivery. As the pregnancy progresses, hormonal changes will happen in the mother’s body that may lead to complaints such as nausea, vomiting, indigestion, constipation, varicose vein, headache, muscle cramps or low back ache. All these problems can be remedied through a planned garbhini paricharya regimen.

A postnatal period is the period beginning immediately after the separation of placenta and extending up to six weeks, otherwise called as puerperal period. Postnatal care is named as Suthika Paricharya in ayurveda.

Objectives of Suthika Paricharya are to ensure a normal puerperium with delivery of a healthy baby, restoration of the health of mother to maintain maternal and infant’s health, preventing illness, to establish infant feeding and provide emotional support to the mother.
